My Short Review: The High 5 Habit By Mel Robins

Writer's picture: Siddhartha DebSiddhartha Deb

Abstract: A high five's motivational power has been well documented. The book documents the author's perspective, and it also details what researchers discovered about high fives while researching the most effective way to motivate people when faced with challenging tasks. The book focuses on what we can do daily to improve our effectiveness and achieve more.

What’s in it for me? Discover how one simple habit can change your life.

Takeaways:

1. Start the day by high-fiving your reflection.

It seemed trite, sure – but it felt good. The author made the high fives a habit, and every morning she came away from the mirror feeling a little bit better about herself.

2. Scientific research backs up the power of high fives.

According to neurotic research, when we combine an everyday activity, such as brushing our teeth, with an unfamiliar twist, such as high-fiving out reflection, our brain is stimulated, making it easier to form new neural connections.

When we give ourselves a high-five in the mirror, our brain recognizes that something new and unfamiliar is happening and begins to pay attention. When that act is combined with loving thoughts and self-encouragement, the positive attitude is more likely to stick.

Try it for five days and give yourself a high-five every morning. The difference you will notice will astound you.

3. Negative thoughts can create a spiral of negative behaviors.

One negative thought can have a domino effect on other areas, spiraling out of control. The author describes a situation in which her job as a lawyer was negatively impacted by her thinking, which in turn impacted her thoughts, which in turn impacted her job and other aspects of her life. What is the antidote? Being kind, supportive, and encouraging to oneself – in other words, high-fiving one's own reflection.

4. Our Reticular Activating System can get clogged with unhelpful information.

The importance of information is one of the criteria used by our RAS to filter it. If the RAS believes we find negativity to be essential and relevant, it will emphasize it even more. However, if we start looking for positives, our RAS will learn to value them more.

Thankfully, we can clean away this emotional residue.

We can teach it what to look for and gradually train it to focus on all the positive aspects of our life.

One of the criteria that our RAS uses to filter information is essential. If the RAS thinks we see negativity as relevant and significant, it will highlight it even more. However, if we start looking out for positives, our RAS can learn to treat them as necessary instead. 5. Interrupt your thoughts, use a mantra, and act like the person you want to become.

In order to train our RAS to see the world in a new way, we must take three steps. Putting it all together, when a negative thought enters our mind, stop it and tell yourself you will not think about it. Then tell yourself a supportive and accurate mantra( a positive phrase you believe and choose, it can be anything like an actual mantra or a phrase that I am confident). Finally, act in a way that demonstrates that your new belief is correct.
